New York City - Day 4
It was our last full day in New York City and we needed to fit in a lot! We wanted to fuel up to start our day, so we went to nearby Friedmans Restaurant for breakfast. As I’ve talked about before, our girlie loves chocolate chip pancakes, so we had to try these! They did not disappoint! She said they were the best gluten free pancakes that she’s ever had! They were big, fluffy, chocolatey with a pile of whipped cream - in a word, perfect. Friedmans is also known for their amazing gluten free menu and we felt really great about taking our girlie here. Her brother, who isn’t gluten free, said that his sandwich was the best breakfast sandwich he’s ever had!
After breakfast, we took a cab to Battery Park and found a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. I’ve been to NYC before but never took a ferry to see her up close. It was amazing! We ended up having lunch in the Crown Cafe on the island but it wasn’t great. Our girlie ordered a smoothie, a fruit cup and a bag of chips because there weren’t many gluten free options. Luckily, I always carry some gluten free snacks and she was able to also eat a granola bar to fill her up.
After lunch is when things got super touristy and we went to these places:
Ellis Island
The charging bull
Wall Street
The NY Stock Exchange
Federal Hall
Trinity Church & Cemetery
9/11 Memorial Pools
Oculus World Trade Center
It was a busy day and we weren’t sure where to get dinner. I had read some good reviews of the chicken tenders at the Palace Restaurant, so we decided to go there. The food was only so-so and the atmosphere was very “local diner”. Usually that would be great, but everyone seemed to know each other, so we felt a little out of place. We wouldn’t go back here again.
Finally, walking back to our hotel, we stopped in Rockefeller Center again. The weather was great outside, so we decided to get ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s and sit outside to watch the ice skating rink. Our girlie ordered chocolate ice cream, her favorite, and we confirmed it was gluten free. They also changed gloves and the scooper. It was a great way to end our last night in NYC!
It was an amazing trip and I would highly recommend it for someone who is gluten free! We had a huge list of recommendations for gluten free restaurants that we wanted to try - and we didn’t even make it to all of them. They may not have all been nearby, but it was worth the taxi ride or walk to make sure our girlie was taken care of for her meals.
